Living off the land is not a new fad here in Northeast Thailand. It is a way of life that has been going for on generations. The people around here are poor but no one goes to bed hungry. Food is out there waiting to be found, you just need to know where to look and not be afraid to eat anything that moves. Everything here is food, and when you grow up that way, it’s just normal life.
An old lady once told me that Thai people will eat anything with legs except a table and anything with wings except an airplane, that is not an exaggeration, everything is food.
What follows here is not to be gross, or let’s see the crazy stuff people eat, its real food that people here eat every day. Through my youtube videos, I show the seasonal and everyday food that is caught and eaten here. It is truly a self-sustaining lifestyle.
Eating bugs are not for everyone, including me, fried is OK, but it is a common source of free-range organic protein here in rural Thailand, as it is in most of Asia. Most night markets that sell food in Thailand well have one or more food vendors selling fried bugs of many different sizes and varieties, there eaten as a sack normally. Plus a lot of Thai farmers catch bugs at night using light traps, it works and they eat what they catch, or sell them, which is normally very easy to do.
